چکیده
Glassy ejecta are associated to a limited number of impact craters, and yet hold key information about hypervelocity processes. Here we report on the discovery ∼650 km2 glass strewnfield in Central Depression Atacama Desert. These cm-sized splash-form objects, that refer as atacamaites, essentially composed dacitic formed by high-temperature melting local magmatic rocks, with addition variable iron meteorite contamination, 5 wt.% average. The most likely nature for impactor is IIAB group. fission-track plateau method, two samples, yielded mean formation age 7.83±0.26 Ma. No crater has been discovered so far, suggesting it may be relatively small, km-sized crater. glassy nature, aerodynamic shapes, elevated temperature, low water content reminiscent tektites. However, their small size, heterogeneity, oxidation state, significant contamination impactor, more proximal provenance distinguish them from Atacamaites have no equivalent among few known terrestrial ejected glasses, increase intriguing diversity such products propose name “tektoids”.

متن کاملA new titanosaur sauropod from the Atacama Desert, Chile.
Partial remains of a titanosaur sauropod collected in the Tolar Formation (Upper Cretaceous) at the Atacama Desert (Antofagasta Region), northern Chile, is described, and a new species, Atacamatitan chilensis gen. et sp. nov., is erected. The material consists mainly of dorsal and caudal vertebrae, part of a humerus and a femur. The presence of a titanosaur confirms the Cretaceous age for the o...

Introduction: Many photogeologic studies and very recent results from orbital geochemical mapping experiments are consistent with the presence of shallow subsurface ice deposits on Mars. The next step in studying these deposits will be to visit them on the surface, probably with mobile robotic explorers. In order for such rover missions to be successful, they must carry instruments capable of i...
متن کاملDescription and life cycle of a new Physarum (Myxomycetes) from the Atacama Desert in Chile.
A new species of Physarum (Myxomycetes), Physarum atacamense is described in this paper, and details are provided on its life cycle as observed in spore-to-spore culture in agar. The new species was collected during studies of the Atacama Desert in Chile. It has been collected directly in the field and isolated in moist chamber cultures prepared with material from an endemic cactus. The combina...
